Visiting Mount Bromo during peak season

When people plan to visit Mount Bromo, they have no idea how visually and emotionally exhausting/stimulating the place is. You’ll find tourists walking in all directions, Pop Mie stores distracting you at every opportunity, horse pee trails that could splash at you at any moment, the smell of ammonia and sulphur under the mid-day sun.

These are the memories i have of Mount Bromo.
Chaos.

However, looking into the crater silenced the pre-climb walk up.

Two days after christmas, we woke up at 4am to watch the sunrise (and Mount Bromo) from Penanjakan Viewpoint 2.

It was a surprise that viewpoint 2 was not crowded. Despite the peak period, we had the whole place to ourselves.

TIP: Wearing a windbreaker is enough to protect you from the mountain cold.

After spending 1 1/2 hour up there, we made our way down to meet our driver, Pak Hanto. He introduced us to his friend, Adi, the owner of the jeep that would be taking us to the Sea of Sand and Mount Bromo.

TIP: Book a jeep before getting there, because prices will be hiked up if you find one there during peak season. However, there is no shortage of jeeps during the peak season.

Mount Bromo isn’t that much of a climbing challenge. We had to queue to get up the steps of Mount Bromo. Waited 15 minutes before the queue started moving along.

It was really crowded at the top.

Some wandered beyond.

My legs were wobbly at the thought of people walking at the edges of Mount Bromo without any railing for support.

TIP: Be sure to wear proper shoes so you don’t slip and injure yourself.

After spending some time up Mount Bromo, we decided to pay extra for a detour to Savannah Teletubbies. It was named after the children’s television show known for their perfectly manicured hills.
